Night Photography

A lot of the films I love, especially the work of directors like Michael Mann, and the photographer Todd Hido have had a deep effect on my work. I’m channeling them when I shoot, trying to find my own visual voice.

I prefer night photography because I like constraints. Photography captures light, and there isn’t much of it at night, which makes everything look unusual and beautiful. A place you know well looks radically different in the dark. It also requires a tripod and time. These are all long exposures, which I prefer shooting. I think you put more thought into it.

I’m also just drawn to the night. I’ve had persistent sleeping issues throughout my life, and I love the quiet. My favorite thing is a city at night with no people in it. When you find that, it’s absolutely the best. Fog adds a wonderful effect too.
